Eric Johnson lives in Nonesuch, near Versailles, in Woodford County, Kentucky. Eric has his own gallery and studio at 120 North Main Street in Versailles, and also shows at Main Cross Gallery in Lexington. Along with his landscape and figure work, Eric has also painted many portraits on commission, though he takes very few commissions these days. His portraits hang in private and public collections, including seven portraits of Deans for the University of Kentucky Medical Center.

Eric trained in illustration at the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and has studied watercolor extensively with Tony Couch. He has completed illustrations, through his representative in Atlanta, for such clients as Coca-Cola, McDonald’s, and Turner Broadcasting. He has also been the official poster artist for all three U.S. Opens played at the famous Pinehurst No. 2 golf course in Pinehurst, NC (1999, 2005, and 2014).

Eric has been juried into seven Oil Painters of America National Juried Exhibitions (including this year’s, being held at the Steamboat Springs Art Museum in Colorado), and is an OPA Signature Member. He was awarded Best Associate Honorable Mention at the 2017 OPA National, as well as the Third Place award in that year’s Wet Paint Plein Air exhibit. He won First Place in the 2018 OPA Wet Paint Studio division with his portrait “Silas” (below), and an Award of Excellence in the 2021 Wet Paint Plein Air. And, also in 2021, he was awarded the OPA National Exhibition Silver Medal in the Signature/Associate division for his portrait of “Jesse.” He has also won awards for his watercolors and in numerous plein air events around the Bluegrass, and is a signature-member of the Kentucky Watercolor Society.
